This guide breaks down every major festival in the AlUla Moments calendar, explains how the seasons work, covers ticket prices and booking logistics, and helps you decide which event best suits your interests and travel dates. Whether you are drawn to the candlelit ruins of Hegra After Dark, the world-class cycling of the AlUla Tour, or the avant-garde installations of Desert X, there is a window for you — and this page will help you find it.

How the AlUla Festival Calendar Works

The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) organises the annual programme under the umbrella brand AlUla Moments. The 2025–26 calendar includes over 200 individual events — festivals, concerts, art showcases, wellness retreats, adventure races and culinary pop-ups — clustered into distinct seasonal festivals that run from September through April. Each festival has its own identity, target audience and ticketing structure, but they share the same booking platform at experiencealula.com.

The calendar follows a predictable rhythm each year. The season opens in September with the AZIMUTH music festival, builds through heritage and wellness programming in October–November, peaks during the flagship Winter at Tantora in December–January, transitions into an arts and sports focus in January–February, and closes with the AlUla Skies Festival in April. Summer months (May–August) are quieter, with fewer organised events but year-round experiences like the Hegra Tour and Maraya visits still available.

AZIMUTH — The Season Opener (September)

AZIMUTH launches the AlUla season with a two-night open-air music festival held at Wadi Al Fann (Valley of Art), timed to coincide with Saudi National Day celebrations. The 2025 edition ran September 25–26, bringing together international electronic and alternative acts alongside regional talent.

What to Expect

AZIMUTH is a multi-sensory desert party rather than a traditional concert. Think sunrise DJ sets among sandstone formations, immersive art installations, pop-up restaurants serving Saudi and international cuisine, and multiple stages running simultaneously. The 2025 lineup included London Grammar, Kevin de Vries, Mind Against, Shimza and Nemahsis, with regional acts like Shkoon and Dish Dash.

Tickets and Logistics

Tickets for AZIMUTH start from SAR 1,200 (approximately USD 320), making it the most expensive single-event ticket in the AlUla calendar. Gates open at 7 PM. The festival attracts a younger, music-focused crowd — expect a very different atmosphere from the heritage-focused events later in the season. If you are visiting Saudi Arabia primarily for cultural heritage, AZIMUTH may not be the right fit, but for electronic music fans it ranks among the Kingdom’s best festival experiences.

AlUla Wellness Festival (October)

The fourth edition of the AlUla Wellness Festival ran from October 24 to November 1, 2025, combining fitness, mindfulness and endurance racing against the backdrop of AlUla’s sandstone landscapes.

Key Activities

    • AlUla Yoga Programme: 78 sessions across venues including Banyan Tree AlUla, Our Habitas, Shaden Resort and the Five Senses Sanctuary
    • Les Mills Fitness: 22 group sessions at landmarks including Elephant Rock, Harrat Viewpoint, the Maraya Rooftop and the Old Town Amphitheatre
    • AlUla Half Marathon: A 21.1 km race through heritage landscapes, plus a 1.5 km fun run
    • AlUla Duathlon: Olympic, Sprint and Kids’ distances combining running and cycling
    • Ashar Valley Triathlon: Swimming, cycling and running through the valley

The Wellness Festival attracts a health-conscious crowd and sits in a shoulder period before the peak season, meaning accommodation is more affordable. October weather in AlUla averages 28–32°C during the day, dropping to a pleasant 18–20°C at night.

    Ancient Kingdoms Festival (November–December)

The Ancient Kingdoms Festival transforms AlUla into a living open-air museum under the theme “Journeys Through Time.” The 2025 edition ran from November 20 to December 6, and it is the most heritage-focused event in the calendar — the one that brings the archaeology to life rather than simply letting you walk past it.

    Hegra After Dark

The signature experience of the Ancient Kingdoms Festival, and arguably the single best event in the entire AlUla season. Hegra After Dark runs on a longer schedule than the festival itself — from November 26, 2025 through February 14, 2026 — offering visitors an evening journey through the UNESCO World Heritage Site by horse-drawn carriage.

The experience lasts 1 hour 35 minutes and takes you through incense-scented pathways, past illuminated Nabataean tombs, a theatrical marketplace with live performances recreating ancient trade scenes, and the “Secret Garden of Al Khorimat” where you can view illuminated tomb facades while enjoying canapés and refreshments. Tickets start from SAR 250 (USD 67) per person.

Tip: Hegra After Dark is one of the few AlUla experiences that consistently sells out. Book at least two weeks in advance during the December–January peak. You can only view the tombs externally — interior access is not included.

Stories from the Sky — Hegra Drone Show

Running during the first two weeks of the Ancient Kingdoms Festival (November 20–29, 2025), this award-winning 1 hour 40 minute drone performance animates Hegra’s cliffs and tomb facades with choreographed light. The show sketches Nabataean trade routes, royal symbols and desert constellations across the night sky, turning the sandstone landscape into a moving canvas. Projections, sound design and hundreds of synchronised drones combine in a spectacle inspired by real archaeological discoveries along the Incense Road.

    The Incense Road Experience

A curated journey recreating the ancient trade route that made Hegra a wealthy crossroads between the Mediterranean, Mesopotamia and the Arabian interior. Expect sensory storytelling — frankincense, myrrh, spice demonstrations and historical re-enactments.

Ikmah After Dark and Hegra Candlelit Classics

Jabal Ikmah, AlUla’s “open-air library” of ancient inscriptions, opens for evening visits during the festival, while Candlelit Classics concerts bring chamber music into the Hegra archaeological landscape.

Winter at Tantora — The Flagship Festival (December–January)

Winter at Tantora is Saudi Arabia’s most celebrated cultural festival and the centrepiece of the AlUla season. The 2025–26 edition runs from December 18, 2025 to January 10, 2026, under the theme “Winter Brings Us Together.” It takes its name from the Tantora sundial in AlUla Old Town, which historically marked the beginning of the winter agricultural season for local farmers.

    Music and Performance

Winter at Tantora opens with Shorfat Tantora, an evening where musical ensembles perform from the balconies and rooftops of the AlJadidah neighbourhood, blending Saudi classics, operatic pieces and contemporary sounds into a unique rooftop concert experience. Major performances in the 2025–26 edition include:

    • Ahlam (December 26) — one of the Gulf’s most celebrated Emirati vocalists
    • Assala Nasri and Adam (December 31) — a New Year’s Eve performance by the “Queen of Arab Music” and Lebanese star Adam
    • Two nightly shows at the Old Town Amphitheatre featuring immersive storytelling, live performance and large-screen visuals

Past editions of Winter at Tantora have hosted international artists including Andrea Bocelli, Usher, Alicia Keys, John Legend and OneRepublic at the Maraya Concert Hall.

    Food and Gastronomy

The Old Town Culinary Voyage is a progressive four-course tasting menu crafted by top chefs with storytelling that weaves AlUla’s food heritage into each dish. Previous editions have featured pop-ups from Ducasse and Annabel’s. The AlManshiyah Carnival (December 19 – January 10) adds street food, parades, games and live music in a family-friendly setting.

    Tickets

Some Winter at Tantora events are free to attend, while ticketed events start from SAR 35 (approximately USD 9). Maraya concerts and premium dining experiences command higher prices. This is the busiest period in AlUla — luxury resorts like Banyan Tree (from SAR 4,200/night) and Our Habitas sell out weeks ahead. Budget travellers should look at Shaden Resort (from USD 118/night) or Cloud7 Residence for more affordable options.

AlUla Arts Festival and Desert X (January–February)

The fifth edition of the AlUla Arts Festival ran from January 16 to February 14, 2026, anchored by the return of Desert X AlUla — the fourth edition of the international open-air contemporary art biennial.

    Desert X AlUla 2026

Curated by Wejdan Reda and Zoé Whitley under the artistic direction of Neville Wakefield and Raneem Farsi, the 2026 edition is themed “Space Without Measure” — drawing inspiration from Kahlil Gibran. Eleven artists installed monumental site-specific works across AlUla’s valleys and canyons:

    • Agnes DenesThe Living Pyramid, a plant-filled installation blooming with local species
    • Basmah FelembanMurmur of Pebbles, monumental limestone sculptures reflecting ancient rivers
    • Maria Magdalena Campos-PonsImole Red, inspired by AlUla’s sunsets and Yoruba spiritual traditions
    • Tarek AtouiThe Water Song, instruments emerging from the ground encouraging visitors to listen to vibrations through the soil
    • Héctor ZamoraTar HyPar, percussion-inspired forms activated by collective movement
    • Mohammad AlfarajWhat was the Question Again?, a living installation centred on grafted palm trunks

Desert X AlUla is free to visit and runs through February 28, 2026, giving you a wider window than the Arts Festival itself.

Arduna Exhibition — Centre Pompidou Collaboration

Running from February 1 to April 15, Arduna (meaning “our land” in Arabic) is a collaboration between the RCU and Paris’s Centre Pompidou, featuring more than 80 artworks from both the Royal Commission’s collection and the Musée National d’Art Moderne — including works by Kandinsky and Picasso. The exhibition explores humanity’s evolving relationship with nature and land.

    Sports During the Arts Season

The arts period overlaps with several major sporting events:

    Event Dates Price Details
AlUla Trail Race Jan 22–23, 2026 From SAR 100 Two days of endurance racing (sold out for 2026)
AlUla Tour (Cycling) Jan 27–31, 2026 Free spectating UCI Asia Tour elite cycling race
AlUla Desert Polo January 2026 Varies World’s first modern polo on a desert sand pitch
AlFursan Endurance Feb 7–8, 2026 From SAR 60 World-class equestrian endurance (15 hours)

    AlUla Skies Festival (April)

The season closer runs from April 17–26, 2026, deliberately timed to coincide with moonless skies and the peak of the Lyrids meteor shower. AlUla holds the distinction of being the Gulf’s first certified Dark Sky Reserve, making this festival a genuine draw for astronomy enthusiasts rather than just a marketing label.

    What’s Included

    • Guided stargazing: Astronomy experts lead telescope sessions at Gharameel and Sharaan, identifying constellations, planets and deep-sky objects. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye from these locations.
    • Hot air balloon rides: Tethered balloon displays set to music, plus free-flying dawn balloon flights over the desert
    • Moonlit cinema: Outdoor film screenings under the desert sky
    • Starlit concert series: Musical performances timed to the darkness
    • Pop-up planetariums: Interactive exhibits on celestial navigation

The Skies Festival offers an ideal shoulder-season visit — April temperatures in AlUla average 30–35°C during the day, warm but manageable for evening activities, and accommodation prices are significantly lower than the December–January peak.

    Ramadan, Eid and Summer Programming

AlUla offers programming during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr (March–April window, varies annually), with family-oriented activities, iftar experiences and cultural events. Eid al-Adha (June window) also sees festive programming with heritage experiences and adventure activities.

Summer in AlUla (June–August) is marketed as a desert escape with wellness retreats and nighttime activities. Temperatures reach 40–45°C, which limits daytime exploration but creates dramatic golden-hour photography conditions and peaceful evening experiences. The AlUla Desert Blaze endurance race is the standout summer event — billed as the Kingdom’s hottest and most challenging race.

Year-Round Experiences Available Outside Festival Windows

Even if your travel dates fall outside the main festival season, AlUla’s core experiences remain available year-round:

    • Hegra Tour: An immersive audio-guided tour of the UNESCO site available in Arabic, English, French, Italian and Mandarin. From SAR 95 per person.
    • Hegra Hop-On Hop-Off: A self-paced tour using multimedia guide devices with interactive screens. Available in English and Arabic.
    • Hegra Premium Tour: Explore in a private 4×4 vehicle — one ticket covers up to seven passengers.
    • Dadan and Jabal Ikmah Tour: A two-hour tour of the ancient Dadanite capital and its “open-air library” of inscriptions. From SAR 60.
    • Maraya Tour: A 45-minute tour of the mirrored concert hall. From SAR 95.
    • Old Town Market Street: Free entry year-round — browse artisan shops and historical sites in AlUla’s restored old quarter.
    • Stargazing at Gharameel or Sharaan: Guided telescope sessions available most clear nights.

Maraya Concert Hall — The Season’s Architectural Centrepiece

No guide to the AlUla festival season is complete without mentioning Maraya, the world’s largest mirrored building. This 9,740 m² mirror-clad structure sits in the Ashar Valley, 20 minutes from AlUla town centre, and serves as the primary concert venue during Winter at Tantora and the Arts Festival.

The 500-seat hall features an 800 m² retractable window behind the stage that opens to reveal the valley’s craggy rock formations. At night, the rocks are illuminated and reflected in the mirrored facade, creating a visual effect that makes the building appear to vanish into the landscape. Maraya Social, the rooftop restaurant by Jason Atherton, offers fine dining with panoramic desert views.
