What Is SAPTCO?
The Saudi Public Transport Company, known universally by its acronym SAPTCO, was established by Royal Decree on 4 February 1979 with an initial capital of SAR 1 billion. It was the first national land carrier in the Kingdom, created to bring organised public transport to a country where private cars had long dominated. Today SAPTCO is a joint-stock company traded on the Saudi Tadawul exchange under the symbol 4040, with the Public Investment Fund (PIF) as its largest shareholder.
SAPTCO operates three main categories of service: intercity buses connecting Saudi cities, urban bus networks within major cities, and international buses to neighbouring countries including Bahrain, the UAE, Kuwait, Jordan and Egypt (via ferry). The company’s fleet consists of approximately 3,250 vehicles, staffed by nearly 2,000 employees including drivers, technicians and administrative personnel.
In 2010, SAPTCO formed a partnership with RATP Dev, one of the world’s top five public transport operators, to manage urban bus networks. More recently, the company established SAT (SAPTCO ALSA for Transportation), a joint venture with the Spanish transport company ALSA, which operates premium direct intercity routes with higher-specification buses.

Major Intercity Routes and Prices
SAPTCO’s intercity network radiates outward from the three main hubs of Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam, with secondary hubs in Makkah, Madinah, Abha, Tabuk and other regional centres. The table below shows standard economy fares for the most popular routes. Prices are one-way and may vary slightly by season, with peak surcharges during Hajj, Ramadan and school holidays.
| Route | Distance (approx.) | Duration (approx.) | Economy Fare (SAR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Riyadh – Jeddah | 985 km | 12 hours | 135–207 |
| Riyadh – Dammam | 428 km | 6 hours | 86–105 |
| Riyadh – Makkah | 960 km | 11–12 hours | 184 |
| Riyadh – Madinah | 845 km | 10–11 hours | 223 |
| Riyadh – Abha | 950 km | 11–12 hours | 167–209 |
| Riyadh – Najran | 950 km | 11 hours | 217 |
| Jeddah – Makkah | 80 km | 1–1.5 hours | 20 |

| Jeddah – Abha | 650 km | 8 hours | 160 |
| Makkah – Madinah | 420 km | 5–6 hours | 69–95 |
| Dammam – Jeddah | 1,350 km | 15–16 hours | 302 |
| Dammam – Makkah | 1,290 km | 14–15 hours | 276 |
| Tabuk – Makkah | 1,100 km | 13 hours | 243 |
| Riyadh – Jizan | 1,050 km | 12 hours | 181 |
Price note: Fare ranges reflect different sources and seasonal variation. The lower figure typically represents the base economy fare booked online, while the higher figure may include peak-season pricing or different service classes. Always check the latest price on the official SAT booking site at booking.satrans.com.sa before travelling.
For shorter trips, the Jeddah–Makkah route at just SAR 20 is one of the best bargains in the country, useful for travellers with a tourist visa who want to visit both cities. The long-haul routes like Riyadh–Jeddah and Dammam–Jeddah are where buses compete most directly with domestic flights, though at a fraction of the cost. A flight from Riyadh to Jeddah typically costs SAR 300–600 but takes 2 hours, while the bus saves money but takes 12 hours.
Economy vs VIP: Choosing Your Bus Class
SAPTCO and SAT operate two main service tiers on intercity routes. Understanding the difference matters, especially on journeys of six hours or more.
Economy Class
The standard service offers air-conditioned coaches with reclining seats, overhead luggage storage and an onboard toilet. Seating is arranged in a 2+2 configuration. These buses make scheduled stops along the route at rest areas where passengers can stretch, buy food and use facilities. Economy buses are comfortable enough for shorter routes (under 4–5 hours) but can feel cramped on the longest journeys.
VIP Class
VIP buses, particularly those operated by SAT, offer a noticeably better experience. Key upgrades include wider reclining leather seats in a 2+1 configuration (just 24 seats per bus), extra legroom, USB and power charging ports, entertainment screens, complimentary drinks, and free Wi-Fi. VIP services typically run non-stop aside from mandatory break stops. On the Makkah–Madinah route (now operated by Darb Alwatan rather than SAPTCO), VIP tickets cost around SAR 100 compared to SAR 85 for standard — a relatively modest premium for substantially more comfort.
Tip: For routes over 6 hours — particularly the 12-hour Riyadh–Jeddah run — the VIP upgrade is worth every riyal. The wider seats and guaranteed power outlets make overnight journeys far more bearable.
How to Buy SAPTCO Bus Tickets
There are four ways to purchase tickets, and booking in advance is strongly recommended for popular routes.
Online Booking (satrans.com.sa)
The SAT booking website at booking.satrans.com.sa is the most convenient option for planning ahead. Select your departure and arrival cities, choose a date and number of passengers, and browse available departures. You can select specific seats on the bus. Payment is accepted via Mada (Saudi debit card), Visa, Mastercard and SADAD. E-tickets are delivered digitally — no printing needed.
SAT Mobile App
The SAT Transportation app is available on both Google Play and the Apple App Store. It mirrors the website’s booking functionality and adds useful features: real-time schedule checking, e-ticket storage, push notifications for schedule changes, and a loyalty programme where you earn points on every booking that can be redeemed for discounts.
At the Terminal
Every SAPTCO bus station has ticket counters where you can purchase tickets in person. Payment is accepted by cash or card. This is the fallback option if online booking gives trouble, but be aware that popular routes can sell out, particularly during peak seasons. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your planned departure to allow time for ticketing and boarding.
Third-Party Platforms
International booking platforms like Bookaway and CheckMyBus also sell SAPTCO tickets, which can be convenient if you want to compare with other operators or if the official site is difficult to navigate. Prices may include a small markup.
Booking advice: For popular routes like Riyadh–Jeddah, book 2–3 days in advance. During Hajj season, Ramadan and school holidays, book as far ahead as possible — up to 30 days in advance. Tickets sell out fast during these periods.
Bus Terminal Locations
SAPTCO operates dedicated bus stations in every major city. Terminals typically include ticket counters, waiting lounges, shops, prayer rooms, toilets and sometimes restaurants. Below are the main terminals you are most likely to use.

Riyadh
The main SAPTCO station is in the Al Aziziyah district, on the South Circular (Al Aziziyah, Riyadh 14512). It is a large, well-equipped terminal with a computerised booking system, spacious lounge, multiple shops and food outlets. The station handles departures to all major Saudi cities and some international routes.
Jeddah
Jeddah’s primary bus terminal is in the historic Al Balad district (Al Dhahab, Jeddah 22233), across the road from the Golden Palm Mall. Operating hours are 05:30 to 22:30 daily. A useful airport connection exists: the Jeddah Airport Express shuttle runs from King Abdulaziz International Airport to the Al Balad station for SAR 15, operating from 05:30 to 23:30 every 30 minutes.
Dammam
The Dammam station is at 8063 11th Street, As Salam, Dammam 32416. A separate international terminal at Al Anud, Dammam 32427 handles departures to Bahrain and the UAE. SAPTCO also operates a shuttle from King Fahd International Airport to Dammam city centre, approximately a 30-minute journey.
Makkah
The SAPTCO Bus Station Al Haram is at Jarwal, Makkah 24231, northwest of Masjid al-Haram. A separate VIP station operates from Ajyad. From the Makkah station, visitors can access free 24/7 shuttle buses through a tunnel to the Aziziya area, which has numerous hotels and restaurants.
Madinah
Located on Prince Abdulmajeed Ibn Abdulaziz Road, Bani Abdul Ashhal, Madinah 42313. This station serves both intercity routes and the local Madinah urban bus network, which covers 116 stations across five routes.
Other Stations
SAPTCO maintains stations in Al Ahsa, Tabuk, Abha, Khamis Mushait, Najran, Jizan, Taif, Buraydah, Ha’il and dozens of smaller towns. The network is genuinely extensive, reaching communities that have no rail connections and limited air service.
What to Expect Onboard
Setting the right expectations will make your SAPTCO journey more enjoyable. Here is an honest assessment of what you will find on a typical intercity bus.
Comfort and Seating
Standard intercity coaches have air-conditioned cabins with reclining seats. Newer buses on major routes are reasonably comfortable, with adequate legroom for most passengers. However, the fleet is mixed — some older buses on secondary routes may not match the standards shown online. Front seats on all buses are reserved for families.
Amenities
Most intercity buses are equipped with air conditioning (essential in the Saudi climate), reclining seats, onboard toilets and overhead luggage bins. Newer coaches and SAT premium services add USB charging ports, entertainment screens and Wi-Fi. Be aware that Wi-Fi availability can be inconsistent — some travellers report that advertised Wi-Fi was not functioning during their journey. Bring a power bank and downloaded entertainment as a backup.
Rest Stops
On longer routes, buses make scheduled stops at roadside rest stations every 3–4 hours. These typically have toilets, a small mosque, and shops selling food, drinks and snacks. Stops last 15–20 minutes. The driver will announce the stop and departure time.
Gender Seating
Saudi cultural norms apply onboard. Single male passengers will not be seated next to unrelated female passengers. Family sections are designated, typically at the front of the bus. This is enforced at boarding, so solo male travellers should be aware that seat changes may be required even with a pre-booked seat assignment.
Punctuality
Traveller reviews consistently mention that SAPTCO buses do not always depart on time. Delays of 30 minutes to over an hour have been reported, particularly on less popular routes. Build buffer time into your schedule, especially if you have onward connections.

Luggage Rules
SAPTCO has generous luggage allowances compared to airlines, which is one advantage of bus travel for those with heavy bags.
- Domestic trips (full ticket): up to 75 kg of checked luggage
- Domestic trips (half ticket / children 2–12): up to 35 kg
- Maximum dimensions: 90 cm length x 50 cm width x 40 cm height per bag
- Excess baggage: SAR 1 per kilogram over the allowance
- International trips: up to 100 kg for a full ticket, 50 kg for a half ticket
- Book ahead, not at the door. Popular routes sell out, especially during holidays and weekends. Online booking 2–3 days ahead secures your seat and lets you choose where to sit.
- Arrive early. Check in at the terminal at least one hour before departure for intercity trips, and two hours before for international journeys.
- Bring entertainment and power. Download films, podcasts or music before you board. Bring a power bank — even buses with USB ports may not work at every seat.
- Carry snacks and water. While rest stops offer food, having your own supply avoids dependence on schedules. Saudi rest-stop shops sell dates, Arabic coffee and sandwiches.
- Dress for the air conditioning. Buses can be very cold inside despite the desert heat outside. Bring a light jacket or blanket, particularly for overnight journeys.
- Keep valuables with you. Use a small carry-on bag for your passport, phone, wallet and any electronics. The checked luggage goes into the hold and is not accessible during the journey.
- Build in buffer time. Do not schedule tight onward connections immediately after a bus arrival. Delays of 30–60 minutes are common enough that they should be planned for.
- Download the SAT app. The SAT Transportation app (available on iOS and Android) is useful for real-time schedule updates, e-ticket storage and tracking your bus.
- Consider overnight departures wisely. On long routes like Riyadh–Jeddah, overnight buses can save accommodation costs. However, sleeping comfort depends heavily on whether you book economy or VIP.
- Know the children’s discount. Children between 2 and 12 years old travel at half the adult fare. Infants under 2 travel free but do not get their own seat.

Luggage is stored in the hold compartments beneath the bus. Upon arrival, proceed to the luggage department to collect your bags before leaving the station. Passengers are responsible for their own valuables and travel documents — keep these in your carry-on rather than in checked luggage.
Practical tip: If you are travelling with large luggage and connecting onward by domestic flight, remember that airline baggage limits are far stricter (typically 23–30 kg). If you are renting a car at your destination, see our Saudi rental car guide for vehicle options.
City Bus Services
Beyond intercity travel, SAPTCO also operates urban bus networks in several Saudi cities. These are entirely separate services from the intercity coaches, with their own routes, schedules and payment systems.
Riyadh
The Riyadh Bus network, part of the King Abdulaziz Public Transport Project, is the most extensive urban bus system in the Kingdom. As of late 2023, the system operates 54 routes served by 614 buses across more than 1,632 stops. Routes criss-cross the sprawling capital, connecting residential districts with commercial centres, government buildings and shopping areas. The longest route (Route 17) runs 27 km from Al Batha to the Industrial City.
Jeddah
The Jeddah bus network operates 6 main routes with 76 modern buses serving 72 stations across the city. Buses run 18 hours a day, from 05:30 to 22:30, seven days a week. The fare is SAR 3.45 per ride (including VAT). You will need a SAPTCO transport card or a virtual QR code to ride — cash is not accepted on urban buses. Cards are valid for one year from the last use.
Madinah and Eastern Province
Madinah operates an urban bus network with 5 main routes and 116 stations, while the Eastern Province (covering Dammam, Al Khobar and surrounding areas) has its own SAPTCO-operated bus service connecting key areas of the region.

International Bus Routes
SAPTCO also operates scheduled international services to neighbouring countries. This can be a practical option for travellers exploring the wider Gulf region.
| Route | Service | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dammam – Bahrain (Manama) | Daily | Via King Fahd Causeway. Passport and visa required. |
| Dammam – UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah) | Multiple weekly | Long journey (12+ hours). Check UAE visa requirements. |
| Riyadh – UAE | Multiple weekly | Via Dammam or direct southern route. |
| Jeddah – Jordan (Amman) | Scheduled | Via Tabuk and the northern border. Very long journey. |
| Jeddah – Egypt | Scheduled | Includes ferry crossing from the Red Sea coast. |
International departures use dedicated terminals (in Dammam, the international terminal is at Al Anud, separate from the domestic station). Arrive at least two hours before departure for international trips to allow time for document checks and customs processing.
SAPTCO vs Other Transport Options
How does the bus compare to other ways of getting around Saudi Arabia? Here is a practical comparison to help you choose.
| Factor | SAPTCO Bus | Domestic Flight | Rental Car |
|---|---|---|---|
| Riyadh–Jeddah cost | SAR 135–207 | SAR 300–600 | SAR 150–250/day + fuel |
| Riyadh–Jeddah time | 12 hours | 2 hours | 9–10 hours |
| Luggage allowance | 75 kg | 23–30 kg | Unlimited |
| Flexibility | Fixed schedule | Multiple daily | Complete freedom |
| Best for | Budget travellers | Time-pressed visitors | Exploring regions |
| Licence needed | No | No | International driving licence |
Buses make the most sense for budget-conscious travellers, those with heavy luggage, routes too short for a flight but too long for a taxi (like Jeddah–Taif or Riyadh–Dammam), and situations where you want to arrive rested without the stress of driving. Overnight buses on long routes can also save a night’s hotel cost.
Tips for Travelling by SAPTCO Bus
Based on real traveller experiences and practical research, here are the tips that will make your SAPTCO journey smoother.
For pilgrims: If you are visiting Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah, SAPTCO operates dedicated pilgrimage transport services between the holy cities. Free shuttle buses run 24 hours a day from the Makkah bus station through a tunnel to the Aziziya accommodation area. During Hajj season, special services connect Makkah, Madinah, Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah.
Contact and Customer Service
SAPTCO’s unified customer service number is 920000877, available in Arabic and English. You can also reach them by email at [email protected]. For trip-specific queries, the SAT booking website at satrans.com.sa has a help section. The company was awarded the “Great Place to Work” certification for 2026, suggesting internal improvements that may gradually translate into better customer-facing service.
SAPTCO’s cancellation policy is relatively flexible. Tickets can be changed or cancelled through the booking platform, though refund amounts and conditions vary by fare type and how close to departure you make the change. Check the terms and conditions on the SAT website before booking.
