US Defense Secretary visits Saudi Military Site in preparation for sending in 2,800 US troops

Defense Secretary Mark Esper visited a Saudi Military site this week and met with King Salman, in preparation for a build up of troops in the Kingdom. Esper also stated on Tuesday that he will urge allies to contribute more to the defense of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region to counter the growing threat from Iran.

This is part of a broader U.S. move to get NATO allies more involved in Saudi Arabia’s security and protecting the position of the Saudi Royal Family from outside threats.

The U.S. agreed to send three Patriot missile batteries and tens of fighter jets to Saudi Arabia to contribute to security. Esper added that Saudi Arabia will “help underwrite” some U.S. costs for the additional military equipment and support, which includes 3,000 plus American troops.
