A Brief History: From Silence to Soundstorm

For more than three decades, public concerts were effectively banned in Saudi Arabia. The religious police enforced strict social codes that prohibited cinemas, mixed-gender gatherings, and live musical performances. That era ended abruptly in 2016 when King Salman established the General Entertainment Authority (GEA) by royal decree, tasking it with building an entertainment industry from scratch.

The first tentative concerts appeared in 2017. By 2018, mixed-gender events were permitted. In October 2019, BTS performed at Riyadh’s King Fahd International Stadium — the first foreign artist stadium concert in the Kingdom’s history — and the inaugural Soundstorm festival debuted in December of the same year. Since then, Saudi Arabia has invested billions in world-class venues, seasonal festival infrastructure, and artist partnerships. The result is a live music calendar that now rivals Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Major Venues

Kingdom Arena — Riyadh

Located in the Hittin district within Boulevard City, Kingdom Arena is Riyadh’s premier indoor concert venue. The fully air-conditioned, retractable-roof arena holds approximately 30,000 and hosts headline acts during Riyadh Season. Past events include international concerts, WWE championships, and boxing title fights. The adjoining ANB Arena provides a smaller indoor option for mid-tier acts.

Banban Festival Grounds — Riyadh (Soundstorm)

The Soundstorm festival takes place at the purpose-built Banban desert site, roughly 30–40 minutes from central Riyadh. The grounds accommodate up to 200,000 attendees across 14 stages, with the main Big Beast stage alone holding 110,000. This is where Eminem, Linkin Park, and Muse performed in December 2024.

King Fahd International Stadium — Riyadh

With a capacity of nearly 69,000, King Fahd International Stadium hosted BTS’s landmark 2019 concert and David Guetta’s performance at the 2022 Saudi Games. The stadium is currently undergoing reconstruction to expand capacity to over 70,000 and is expected to reopen in 2026.

Jeddah Superdome

The largest geodesic dome on the planet, Jeddah Superdome seats 40,000 and hosts concerts, exhibitions, and wrestling events. Located on Madinah Road west of King Abdullah Sports City, it opened in June 2021 and has become Jeddah’s signature entertainment venue.

King Abdullah Sports City (The Jewel) — Jeddah

This 62,000-seat retractable-roof stadium in Jeddah has hosted Janet Jackson, Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown, and 50 Cent as part of Jeddah World Fest events. Its modular seating system allows reconfiguration for concerts, and the venue benefits from proximity to the Red Sea coast.

Jeddah Corniche Circuit

Not a permanent concert venue, but the Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and Formula E weekends at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit include post-race concerts. In 2026, Shakira, Pitbull, Tyla, and Kygo performed across the April 17–19 race weekend, with concert access included in Grand Prix tickets from SAR 468 (~$125).

Maraya Concert Hall — AlUla

Maraya is unlike any other concert venue in the world. A three-storey cuboid clad in 9,740 square metres of mirrored glass, it holds the Guinness World Record for the largest mirrored building (awarded December 26, 2019). Set against the ancient sandstone formations of AlUla’s Ashar Valley, the mirrors reflect the desert landscape in a surreal optical illusion. The main auditorium seats 500 for intimate performances, expandable to around 2,000 for larger configurations. Since 2024, Live Nation Arabia has operated the venue under a three-year partnership.

Past performers at Maraya include Andrea Bocelli, Mariah Carey, John Legend, Usher, Alicia Keys, Lionel Richie, and James Blunt. If you are planning a visit, pair it with exploring the archaeological wonders of AlUla — including the UNESCO-listed Hegra and the ancient Dadan settlement.

Saudi Seasons: When the Music Plays

The GEA organises a calendar of Saudi Seasons — city-wide entertainment festivals that serve as the backbone of the Kingdom’s live music programme. Understanding the seasons is essential for planning a music-focused trip.

Riyadh Season (October–March)

The biggest of the lot. The 2025–26 edition ran from October 10 through March 2026, drew 20 million visitors, and featured 11 entertainment zones, over 200 concerts, and 15 world championships. Boulevard City and Boulevard World (with 24 sub-zones, 1,700 shops, and 500+ restaurants) are the epicentre. Recent headliners include Amr Diab, Nancy Ajram, Ciara, Busta Rhymes, and Missy Elliott. For accommodation during Riyadh Season, book well in advance — the capital fills up fast.

Jeddah Season (June–August)

Running approximately 85 days through the summer months, Jeddah Season brings live music, beach entertainment, cultural exhibitions, and family activities to the Red Sea coast. The Jeddah World Fest and seasonal programming at the Superdome are highlights.

AlUla Season / Winter at Tantora (December–January)

The most culturally refined of the seasons. Winter at Tantora runs from mid-December through early January (the 2025–26 edition: December 18 – January 10) and features concerts at Maraya alongside heritage tours, adventure activities, and gastronomy festivals. AlUla also hosts the Azimuth music festival around Saudi National Day in late September, and the AlUla Arts Festival in January–February.

Other Seasons

Diriyah Season (November) brings heritage-focused entertainment to the UNESCO site near Riyadh, while Sharqiyah Season (March) serves the Eastern Province. Both include live performances, though on a smaller scale.

Soundstorm: The Middle East’s Largest Music Festival

If one event defines Saudi Arabia’s live music revolution, it is MDL Beast Soundstorm. Launched in 2019 and held annually every December at the Banban desert site outside Riyadh, Soundstorm has grown into the largest music festival in the Middle East.

How to Buy Tickets

The Saudi ticketing landscape is fragmented across several platforms. Here is where to look for each type of event:

    • Webook.com — Saudi Arabia’s leading ticketing platform (formerly Hala Yalla). Over 10 million tickets sold. Official partner for Riyadh Season and most major events. Accepts Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay.
    • NOFOMO — The official MDLBEAST app. Required for Soundstorm tickets. Includes loyalty points and early-access perks.
    • Platinumlist.net — Covers Saudi Arabia and the wider GCC. Has a ticket exchange/resale feature for sold-out events.
    • Ticketmaster — Available for select international acts.
    • Official event websites — riyadhseason.com, saudiarabiangp.com, experiencealula.com, and jeddahsuperdome.com sell direct.

Warning: Unofficial resellers and social media scalpers are a persistent problem. Only buy from the platforms listed above. If a deal looks too good to be true, it almost certainly is.

What to Expect: Practical Guide for Concert-Goers

    Dress Code

Saudi Arabia has relaxed its dress code rules significantly in recent years, but modesty remains the cultural norm. Women are no longer legally required to wear an abaya, though loose-fitting clothing covering arms and legs is expected. Head coverings are not required for non-Muslim women. Men should wear long trousers and shirts with sleeves. Avoid clothing with alcohol branding, profanity, or politically sensitive imagery.

    Alcohol

There is none. Saudi Arabia maintains a complete ban on alcohol. No concert, festival, club, or venue in the Kingdom serves alcoholic drinks. Expect juice bars, coffee stations, mocktail lounges, and energy drinks instead. Festival-goers accustomed to European or American events should adjust expectations accordingly — the atmosphere runs on music and crowd energy alone.

    Gender Mixing

Strict gender segregation at events ended years ago. Men and women attend concerts together, share seating areas, and move freely at festivals. Early events in 2017–2018 sometimes imposed separate sections; this is no longer standard practice at any major venue.

    Weather and What to Bring

Most major concerts fall between October and March, when Riyadh’s daytime temperatures hover around 20–30°C but desert evenings can drop sharply. For outdoor festivals like Soundstorm, bring a light jacket or hoodie. Summers in Jeddah are hot and humid (35°C+), so indoor venues with air conditioning are preferred for Jeddah Season events.

    Getting Around

Major events provide dedicated shuttle services. Riyadh Season runs buses from multiple pickup points to Boulevard City and Boulevard World. Soundstorm provides shuttle transport from central Riyadh to the Banban desert site — driving yourself is possible but parking is a challenge. Ride-hailing apps (Uber, Careem) operate throughout Saudi Arabia and surge pricing is common after major events end.

    Connectivity and Apps

Download event-specific apps before you arrive: the Riyadh Season app for navigation and schedules during the capital’s festival, NOFOMO for Soundstorm, and the Visit Saudi app for general travel planning. Free Wi-Fi is available at most major venues but can be unreliable during peak crowd moments — a local Saudi SIM card with data is recommended. You will need your e-visa documentation on your phone for entry.

Who Has Performed in Saudi Arabia?

The roster of international artists who have played Saudi Arabia reads like a festival headliner hall of fame. Here is a selection of confirmed performances since the entertainment ban was lifted:

    • 2019: BTS (King Fahd Stadium, Riyadh — first foreign artist stadium concert in Saudi history)
    • 2021: Justin Bieber, Jason Derulo, A$AP Rocky, David Guetta, Tiesto (Jeddah, F1 weekend)
    • 2022: Bruno Mars, Post Malone, David Guetta, DJ Snake, Marshmello, Tiesto (Soundstorm); David Guetta (King Fahd Stadium, Saudi Games)
    • 2023: Metallica, Travis Scott, Swedish House Mafia, 50 Cent, Chris Brown, Wizkid (Soundstorm)
    • 2024: Eminem, Linkin Park, Muse, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Calvin Harris, Camila Cabello (Soundstorm); Andrea Bocelli, James Blunt (Maraya, AlUla); Ciara, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott (Riyadh Season)
    • 2025: Post Malone, Cardi B, Halsey, Swedish House Mafia, Pitbull, Tyla, Young Thug (Soundstorm); Wael Kfoury, Elissa (Winter at Tantora)
    • 2026: Shakira, Pitbull, Tyla, Kygo (Jeddah F1); Future (Jeddah Formula E)

The trend is clear: Saudi Arabia is spending heavily to attract the world’s biggest names. With luxury hospitality infrastructure expanding rapidly, the Kingdom is positioning itself as a year-round entertainment destination.

The Saudi Music Scene Beyond International Acts

While international headliners grab the headlines, Saudi Arabia has a thriving domestic music scene worth exploring. Arabic pop stars like Amr Diab, Tamer Hosny, Nancy Ajram, and Mohamed Hamaki regularly perform during Riyadh Season to massive audiences. The Saudi electronic music scene has grown alongside MDLBEAST, with local DJs and producers increasingly appearing on festival lineups.

Traditional Saudi music — including the ardah (sword dance accompanied by drums and poetry) and mizmar (Hejazi pipe music) — can be experienced at heritage events during Diriyah Season and at cultural dining experiences throughout the Kingdom.

Planning Your Trip Around a Concert

    For Soundstorm (December)

Fly into Riyadh (RUH). Book accommodation in central Riyadh — the Hittin, Olaya, or KAFD districts offer the best access to both Soundstorm shuttles and Riyadh Season attractions. Allow 3–5 days: the festival runs for 3 days, but Riyadh Season will be in full swing with hundreds of additional events at Boulevard City. December weather is ideal — cool, dry, and comfortable for outdoor festivals.

    For AlUla Concerts (December–January)

Fly into AlUla (ULH) or connect via Riyadh. AlUla is a destination in itself, so plan at least 3–4 days to combine a Maraya concert with visits to Hegra, Elephant Rock, Dadan, and the Old Town. Winter at Tantora runs from mid-December to early January. Nights are cold in the desert (5–10°C), so pack warm layers.

    For Jeddah Events (Year-Round)

Jeddah’s events are spread across the calendar: Formula E in February, F1 in April, and Jeddah Season through the summer. The Jeddah historic district (Al-Balad), the Corniche, and the Red Sea coastline provide plenty to do between performances. Summer visitors should be prepared for extreme heat and humidity.

    Combining Multiple Cities

Domestic flights between Riyadh, Jeddah, and AlUla are frequent and affordable (SAR 200–500 one way on Saudia or flynas). A 7–10 day itinerary hitting Soundstorm in Riyadh, then flying to AlUla for Winter at Tantora and continuing to Jeddah for shopping and coastal exploration makes for an extraordinary music-and-culture trip.
