AlUla transforms between late October and late March. Summer temperatures that push past 40°C give way to crisp mornings, mild afternoons and star-filled desert nights — and the Royal Commission for AlUla fills the calendar with festivals, concerts, sporting events and after-dark heritage experiences that run nowhere else in Saudi Arabia. If you are planning an AlUla travel itinerary, winter is the season to book. This guide covers every major event, month-by-month weather data, accommodation, and the practical details you need to make the most of peak season in the Kingdom’s open-air museum.
Best Time to Visit: November to February (coolest weather, peak festival calendar)

Why Winter Is AlUla’s Peak Season
AlUla sits in a sandstone valley in northwest Saudi Arabia, roughly 1,100 kilometres from Riyadh and 700 kilometres north of Jeddah. In summer, daytime temperatures routinely exceed 40°C and most outdoor experiences close entirely. The winter season — officially running from 26 October 2025 to 28 March 2026 for the current year — reverses that equation. Daytime highs settle between 18°C and 25°C, nights drop to 4-10°C, and the Royal Commission for AlUla programmes six back-to-back festivals across the period. AlUla International Airport scales up to 27 weekly flights from regional hubs. Hotels, which run at modest occupancy in summer, fill well in advance for December and January dates.
The season also unlocks experiences that simply don’t operate in the heat. Hot air balloon flights launch at dawn over the sandstone formations. Hegra After Dark takes visitors through the UNESCO World Heritage Site by horse-drawn carriage and candlelight. Trail races, a UCI-sanctioned cycling tour and a desert polo championship all take advantage of the cooler conditions. For anyone visiting Saudi Arabia between November and February, AlUla offers the most concentrated calendar of events anywhere in the country.

Month-by-Month Weather Guide
AlUla’s desert climate means virtually no rain across the entire winter season — total precipitation from October to March averages around 24 mm — but temperatures vary considerably by month. Layered clothing is essential: afternoons can feel warm in the sun, while desert nights are genuinely cold.
| Month | Avg High | Avg Low | Rainfall | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| October | 33°C / 91°F | 17°C / 63°F | 2 mm | Still warm by day; Wellness Festival opens the season |
| November | 25°C / 77°F | 11°C / 52°F | 5 mm | Comfortable; Ancient Kingdoms Festival and Hegra After Dark begin |
| December | 20°C / 68°F | 6°C / 43°F | 2 mm | Peak season — Winter at Tantora; cold nights, bring a jacket |
| January | 18°C / 64°F | 4°C / 39°F | 8 mm | Coldest month; Arts Festival, Desert X, Polo, Trail Race |
| February | 21°C / 70°F | 7°C / 45°F | 3 mm | Warming; equestrian endurance, last weeks of Desert X |
| March | 25°C / 77°F | 10°C / 50°F | 4 mm | Season closing; pleasant hiking weather |
Packing tip: Bring a warm fleece or down jacket for evenings — Hegra After Dark and stargazing sessions happen outdoors in temperatures that can drop below 5°C in December and January. Daytime calls for sun protection, a hat and comfortable walking shoes for heritage sites.
The Complete 2025-26 Events Calendar
The Royal Commission for AlUla programmes its winter season under the AlUla Moments umbrella — a rolling calendar of festivals, sporting events and cultural experiences. Here is the full confirmed schedule for the current season, running alongside the broader Saudi Arabia travel calendar.
AlUla Wellness Festival (24 October – 1 November 2025)
The season opener combines fitness, endurance sport and mindfulness against a desert backdrop. The 2025 edition featured 78 yoga sessions at sites including Elephant Rock and the Maraya rooftop, 22 fitness classes led by elite trainers, and Les Mills sessions. The flagship sporting events include the AlUla Half Marathon (distances from 1.5 km for children up to 21.1 km), the AlUla Duathlon in Olympic, Sprint and Kids categories, and the region’s first 24-Hour Endurance Race.
Ancient Kingdoms Festival (20 November – 6 December 2025)
This festival centres on AlUla’s archaeological heritage. Headline events include the Hegra Candlelit Classics concert series — the 2025-26 season featured Japanese rock legend YOSHIKI with Lebanese trumpet virtuoso Ibrahim Maalouf on 20 November, followed by Grammy-winning pianist and bandleader Jon Batiste on 21 November. The “Secrets of the Scribe” experience at Jabal Ikmah offers after-dark immersion among ancient Dadanitic and Nabataean inscriptions with hands-on sculpture workshops.
Hegra After Dark (26 November 2025 – 14 February 2026)
Winner of Best Arts and Culture Event at the 2025 Middle East Event Awards, this 95-minute experience takes visitors through the UNESCO-listed Hegra necropolis by horse-drawn carriage. The route passes through a theatrical marketplace, walks candlelit paths between monumental Nabataean tombs dating to the first century CE, follows incense trails with site-specific performances and guided storytelling, and concludes with refreshments in the “Secret Garden of Al Khorimat.” It runs nightly and sells out quickly — booking at least two weeks in advance through experiencealula.com is strongly recommended.

Winter at Tantora (18 December 2025 – 10 January 2026)
AlUla’s marquee winter festival, themed “Winter Brings Us Together” for the 2025-26 season, is the single biggest draw. Named after the sundial in AlUla Old Town that traditionally marked the beginning of the agricultural season, Winter at Tantora packs headline concerts, heritage celebrations and culinary events into three weeks around Christmas and New Year.
Key events include:
- Headline concerts: Emirati superstar Ahlam (26 December); Assala Nasri with Lebanese star Adam for New Year’s Eve (31 December); the Thanaya Concert Series in a natural canyon amphitheatre
- Shorfat Tantora: Free open-air concerts with musicians performing from balconies and raised platforms in the AlJadidah Arts District and AlManshiyah Plaza
- Old Town Nights: A 70-minute amphitheatre performance inspired by oasis life and trade routes, followed by fine dining under the stars (18 December – 10 January)
- Old Town Culinary Voyage: A four-stop tasting journey through different Old Town restaurants, with pop-ups by internationally acclaimed chefs including Alain Ducasse

- From Medina: ~330 km, approximately 4 hours — the most practical road trip route
- From Jeddah: ~700 km, 7-8 hours
- From Tabuk: ~300 km, approximately 4 hours
- From Riyadh: ~1,000 km, 10-12 hours
- Book heritage tickets early: Hegra After Dark, balloon flights and Tantora concerts sell out weeks in advance. Check experiencealula.com as soon as dates open.
- Layer up for evenings: Desert nights in December and January can drop below 5°C. Bring a proper jacket — not just a light cardigan.
- Plan around festivals: If you want a quieter visit with lower hotel rates, aim for November (before Tantora) or late February (after Arts Festival). The AlUla travel guide covers the full range of visiting options.
- Allocate enough time: Two nights is a minimum to cover Hegra, Elephant Rock and one evening experience. Three to four nights allows you to add the Old Town, Dadan, Jabal Ikmah, a balloon flight and a hiking trail.
- Alcohol: AlUla is dry. No alcohol is served at any venue, hotel or restaurant.
- Currency: Saudi Riyal (SAR). Cards are widely accepted at all hotels, restaurants and experience booking points. ATMs are available in AlUla town.
- Dress code: Modest dress is expected. At heritage and cultural sites, shoulders and knees should be covered. There is no requirement for women to wear an abaya, but a scarf may be useful for sun protection and for visiting conservative areas.

AlUla Arts Festival (16 January – 14 February 2026)
Now in its fifth edition, the Arts Festival fills AlUla’s valleys, canyons and heritage spaces with contemporary art installations, performances and residencies. Running concurrently, Desert X AlUla (16 January – 28 February 2026) stages its fourth edition of large-scale contemporary art installations across the desert landscape — outdoor sculptures and land art by international artists placed in dialogue with AlUla’s natural formations. The Arduna exhibition (1 February – 15 April 2026) extends the contemporary art programme into spring.

Sporting Events (January – February 2026)
AlUla’s winter calendar is increasingly built around world-class sport:

|---|---|---|
| AlUla Desert Polo | 15-17 January 2026 | 5th edition; 6 teams, 9 matches on desert sand — past players include Adolfo Cambiaso and Ignacio Figueras |

Year-Round Winter Season Experiences
Beyond the headline festivals, several experiences operate throughout the entire October-March season and should be booked in advance.
Hot Air Balloon Flights
Operated by Hero Balloon Flights, AlUla’s dawn balloon rides are the most sought-after winter experience. Flights last 45-60 minutes, reaching up to 1,200 metres above the valley floor with views over Elephant Rock, Hegra, Maraya and the oasis. Prices start from approximately SAR 995 per person for a shared group flight. Hotel pickup and drop-off, in-flight refreshments and a post-flight celebration are included. Book early — slots fill fast during December and January.
Helicopter Tours
A 30-minute helicopter tour covers seven major landmarks including Elephant Rock, Hegra, Maraya, Jabal Ikmah and AlUla Old Town. Minimum booking is two people. Tours are weather-dependent with full refunds or reschedules if cancelled. Book through experiencealula.com or platforms such as GetYourGuide.
Heritage Site Visits
AlUla’s archaeological sites are the foundation of any visit. During winter, the cooler temperatures make exploring on foot far more comfortable than the summer alternative.
| Experience | Price (SAR) | Duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hegra Guided Tour | From 95 | ~2 hours | Guided walk through UNESCO World Heritage tombs |
| Hegra Hop-On Hop-Off | From 150 | 1+ hours | Self-paced bus tour; Nov 1 – Feb 28 only; includes multimedia guide |
| Dadan and Jabal Ikmah Tour | From 60 | ~1.5 hours | Combined guided visit to Lihyanite kingdom ruins and “open library” inscriptions |
| Hegra After Dark | Varies | 1 hr 35 min | Evening; horse-drawn carriage; Nov 26 – Feb 14 only |
Tip: All heritage site tickets must be booked in advance through experiencealula.com. Walk-ups are not guaranteed, especially during festival weekends.
Stargazing
AlUla holds certification as the Gulf’s first Dark Sky Reserve, and winter’s clear, dry skies offer some of the best stargazing conditions in the Middle East. The “Stargazing at Sharaan” experience uses high-powered telescopes with expert guides. A Celestial Sky Port at Jabal Ikmah features interactive exhibits, and a pop-up planetarium in Old Town offers 360-degree projections. Several hotels — including Habitas, The Chedi Hegra and AlMaddham Wilderness Lodge — offer private stargazing sessions for guests.
Hiking and Trail Running
Winter unlocks six marked hiking trails across the AlUla valley, best tackled in the cooler months:

AlUla Old Town in Winter
The restored heritage quarter of AlUla Old Town (Al Dirah) — recognised as a UNESCO Best Tourism Village — comes alive during the winter season. Around 250 conserved mudbrick houses line narrow lanes, some converted into boutique accommodation, restaurants, art galleries and handicraft pavilions. During Winter at Tantora, the Old Town hosts nightly programming including the Old Town Wall Art Walk (a one-hour guided tour running 19 December 2025 to 13 February 2026), the Awaken the Tales escape room experience (1 hour 10 minutes) and the culinary voyage through four restaurants. Even outside festival dates, the Old Town is worth half a day for its architecture, cafes and views of the 10th-century AlUla Fort above.
Where to Stay During Winter Season
