Riyadh Zoo — The Kingdom’s Flagship

Riyadh Zoo, located in the Al-Malaz district near the centre of the capital, is Saudi Arabia’s largest and most-visited zoological park. Spanning 161,000 square metres, the zoo houses more than 1,500 animals across roughly 196 species, including endangered Arabian oryx, Nubian ibex, cheetahs, lions, elephants and hippos. The grounds are divided into six habitat zones designed to mirror natural environments — swamps, forests, coasts and arid desert.

What to See

The zoo’s standout exhibits include a large African savanna section with giraffes, zebras and wildebeest, a big-cat house featuring lions, tigers and cheetahs, and a reptile building with Nile crocodiles and venomous snakes native to the Arabian Peninsula. A dedicated children’s petting area allows younger visitors to interact safely with goats, rabbits and domestic poultry.

A small train circles the perimeter and stops at the major exhibit areas — a welcome option for families with toddlers or elderly visitors who find the full walking route tiring. If you are spending more than a day in the capital, the zoo pairs naturally with a visit to the top kid-friendly activities in Riyadh.

Nofa Wildlife Park — African Safari Near Riyadh

Around 80 kilometres south-west of central Riyadh, Nofa Wildlife Park delivers the closest thing to an African safari experience in Saudi Arabia. Part of the Nofa Resorts complex (a Radisson Collection property), the park is home to more than 2,800 animals across 85 species, including giraffes, zebras, eland, sable antelope, wildebeest, pygmy hippos, ostriches, lions, tigers and cheetahs. Animals roam semi-free across vast desert enclosures, and visitors observe them from specially modified open-topped safari vehicles.

Fakieh Aquarium — Jeddah’s Underwater World

Situated on the north Corniche in Jeddah, Fakieh Aquarium is Saudi Arabia’s premier marine attraction and the Kingdom’s only public aquarium of its scale. Opened in 2013, it showcases more than 200 marine species, with roughly 85 per cent of the collection sourced from the Red Sea’s coral reefs. The main draw for families is the panoramic underwater tunnel, where sharks, rays and schools of tropical fish glide overhead.

If your family is based in Jeddah, pair this with the wider range of kid-friendly activities in Jeddah or a visit to the Jeddah with Kids guide for a full family itinerary.

Taif Zoo — Highland Wildlife in a Cooler Climate

Perched in the mountains above Makkah at around 1,800 metres elevation, Taif offers significantly cooler temperatures than the lowland cities — making its zoo one of the few in Saudi Arabia that is genuinely comfortable to visit year-round. Taif Zoo is compact but well-maintained, housing over 250 species of animals including elephants, giraffes, lions, bears, foxes, camels and deer. It is an ideal half-day outing for families, particularly those with young children who would struggle with a full-day park.

Dammam Zoo — Eastern Province Wildlife

Known locally as Al Hameed Zoo, Dammam Zoo Park sits on the Dammam–Jubail Expressway in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. The zoo features a diverse collection of animals, birds and fish, including crocodiles, hyenas, lions and tigers. While smaller than Riyadh Zoo, it serves as the main zoological attraction for the Dammam–Khobar–Dhahran metro area and makes a solid half-day family outing.

Jungle Land — Animal Encounters in Jeddah

Located inside Mersal Village on the north-east outskirts of Jeddah near King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jungle Land is part theme park, part zoo. Families come for a mix of rides, animal encounters and live shows — including a popular lion show. It suits families looking for a full-day entertainment complex rather than a pure wildlife experience.

Saudi Arabia’s Nature Reserves — Wildlife Beyond the Zoo

Beyond traditional zoos, Saudi Arabia operates an expanding network of protected nature reserves where families can see native wildlife in something much closer to its natural habitat. The National Center for Wildlife (NCW) oversees 16 protected areas across the Kingdom, several of which now offer guided visitor programmes.

Uruq Bani Ma’arid Reserve (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

Inscribed as Saudi Arabia’s first Natural World Heritage Site in September 2023, this reserve sits along the south-western edge of the Rub’ al-Khali (Empty Quarter). It is the centrepiece of the Kingdom’s Arabian oryx reintroduction programme — between 1995 and 2013, 149 oryx were released here, and the population has been steadily growing. The Saudi Tourism Authority offers seasonal visitor packages that include desert camping, safari drives, stargazing and guided wildlife watching. Check availability through the STA’s winter tourism programme.

King Khalid Wildlife Research Center (Thumamah)

Located 70 kilometres north of Riyadh, this facility was established in 1987 for the captive breeding of endangered Arabian species. It houses more than 600 animals across 600 hectares, including Arabian oryx, sand gazelle and mountain gazelle. Guided minibus tours are available by prior arrangement through the National Center for Wildlife (phone: +966 11 441 8700). It is a research-first facility rather than a public zoo, but families with an interest in conservation will find a visit rewarding.

Imam Saud Bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve (near Taif)

Formerly known as Mahazat as-Sayd, this fenced reserve 180 kilometres north-east of Taif serves as a natural laboratory for reintroducing captive-bred herds of threatened species. It is home to the Kingdom’s largest wild population of Nubian ibex. Access is managed through the NCW and may require advance permission.

Tips for Visiting Zoos and Wildlife Parks with Kids

    Beat the Heat

Saudi Arabia’s outdoor wildlife attractions are best visited between October and March, when daytime temperatures in Riyadh and Jeddah sit between 20–30 °C. If you must visit in summer, stick to early-morning slots (before 10 AM) or indoor attractions like Fakieh Aquarium. Taif is the exception — its mountain elevation keeps temperatures 10–15 °C cooler than the lowlands year-round.

    What to Bring

    • Sun protection: Wide-brimmed hats, sunscreen (SPF 50+) and sunglasses for every family member.
    • Water: Carry at least one litre per person per hour for outdoor parks. Most venues sell drinks but queues can be long.
    • Comfortable shoes: All of the major zoos involve significant walking on mixed surfaces.
    • Stroller: Riyadh Zoo and Nofa are stroller-friendly. Taif Zoo’s paths are narrower but manageable.
    • Cash and card: Most venues accept card payment, but street-food vendors near Taif Zoo and Dammam Zoo may be cash-only.

    Prayer Times and Closures

Some attractions may close briefly during prayer times. Plan your visit around midday and afternoon prayer windows — check daily prayer times for the specific city you are in. Friday opening hours are typically later (1–2 PM start) at most venues across the Kingdom.

    Getting Around

Uber and Careem operate reliably in Riyadh, Jeddah, Taif and Dammam. For Nofa Wildlife Park and the more remote nature reserves, a rental car is essential. If you are planning a wider wildlife-focused trip across multiple cities, the Saudi Arabia family road trip guide covers routes and stops in detail.

    Visa and Entry Requirements

All international visitors need a valid visa to enter Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Arabia tourist e-visa is available to citizens of over 60 countries and can be obtained online in minutes. It is valid for one year with multiple entries, and each stay can last up to 90 days. Children must have their own passport and visa — they cannot travel on a parent’s document.

    Where to Stay

For the widest choice of family-friendly hotels near wildlife attractions, base yourself in central Riyadh (for Riyadh Zoo, with Nofa as a day trip) or on the Jeddah Corniche (for Fakieh Aquarium and Jungle Land). The Saudi Arabia Hotels Guide covers family-friendly options in every major city. Nofa Wildlife Park has its own on-site Guest Lodge and safari chalets for overnight stays if you want a full immersion experience.
