What Is SAPTCO?

The Saudi Public Transport Company, known universally by its acronym SAPTCO, was established by Royal Decree on 4 February 1979 with an initial capital of SAR 1 billion. It was the first national land carrier in the Kingdom, created to bring organised public transport to a country where private cars had long dominated. Today SAPTCO is a joint-stock company traded on the Saudi Tadawul exchange under the symbol 4040, with the Public Investment Fund (PIF) as its largest shareholder.

SAPTCO operates three main categories of service: intercity buses connecting Saudi cities, urban bus networks within major cities, and international buses to neighbouring countries including Bahrain, the UAE, Kuwait, Jordan and Egypt (via ferry). For shorter trips, the Jeddah–Makkah route at just SAR 20 is one of the best bargains in the country, useful for travellers with a tourist visa who want to visit both cities. The long-haul routes like Riyadh–Jeddah and Dammam–Jeddah are where buses compete most directly with domestic flights, though at a fraction of the cost. A flight from Riyadh to Jeddah typically costs SAR 300–600 but takes 2 hours, while the bus saves money but takes 12 hours.

Economy vs VIP: Choosing Your Bus Class

Economy Class

At the Terminal

Every SAPTCO bus station has ticket counters where you can purchase tickets in person. Payment is accepted by cash or card. This is the fallback option if online booking gives trouble, but be aware that popular routes can sell out, particularly during peak seasons. Third-Party Platforms

Bus Terminal Locations

SAPTCO operates dedicated bus stations in every major city. Terminals typically include ticket counters, waiting lounges, shops, prayer rooms, toilets and sometimes restaurants. Below are the main terminals you are most likely to use.

Riyadh

The main SAPTCO station is in the Al Aziziyah district, on the South Circular (Al Aziziyah, Riyadh 14512). It is a large, well-equipped terminal with a computerised booking system, spacious lounge, multiple shops and food outlets. The station handles departures to all major Saudi cities and some international routes.

Jeddah

Jeddah’s primary bus terminal is in the historic Al Balad district (Al Dhahab, Jeddah 22233), across the road from the Golden Palm Mall. Operating hours are 05:30 to 22:30 daily. A useful airport connection exists: the Jeddah Airport Express shuttle runs from King Abdulaziz International Airport to the Al Balad station for SAR 15, operating from 05:30 to 23:30 every 30 minutes.

Dammam

The Dammam station is at 8063 11th Street, As Salam, Dammam 32416. A separate international terminal at Al Anud, Dammam 32427 handles departures to Bahrain and the UAE. SAPTCO also operates a shuttle from King Fahd International Airport to Dammam city centre, approximately a 30-minute journey.

Makkah

The SAPTCO Bus Station Al Haram is at Jarwal, Makkah 24231, northwest of Masjid al-Haram. A separate VIP station operates from Ajyad. From the Makkah station, visitors can access free 24/7 shuttle buses through a tunnel to the Aziziya area, which has numerous hotels and restaurants.

Madinah

Located on Prince Abdulmajeed Ibn Abdulaziz Road, Bani Abdul Ashhal, Madinah 42313. This station serves both intercity routes and the local Madinah urban bus network, which covers 116 stations across five routes.

Other Stations

SAPTCO maintains stations in Al Ahsa, Tabuk, Abha, Khamis Mushait, Najran, Jizan, Taif, Buraydah, Ha’il and dozens of smaller towns. The network is genuinely extensive, reaching communities that have no rail connections and limited air service.

Comfort and Seating

Standard intercity coaches have air-conditioned cabins with reclining seats. Newer buses on major routes are reasonably comfortable, with adequate legroom for most passengers. However, the fleet is mixed — some older buses on secondary routes may not match the standards shown online. Front seats on all buses are reserved for families.

Amenities

Most intercity buses are equipped with air conditioning (essential in the Saudi climate), reclining seats, onboard toilets and overhead luggage bins. Newer coaches and SAT premium services add USB charging ports, entertainment screens and Wi-Fi. Be aware that Wi-Fi availability can be inconsistent — some travellers report that advertised Wi-Fi was not functioning during their journey. Rest Stops

On longer routes, buses make scheduled stops at roadside rest stations every 3–4 hours. These typically have toilets, a small mosque, and shops selling food, drinks and snacks. Stops last 15–20 minutes. The driver will announce the stop and departure time.

Gender Seating

Saudi cultural norms apply onboard. Single male passengers will not be seated next to unrelated female passengers. Family sections are designated, typically at the front of the bus. Punctuality

Traveller reviews consistently mention that SAPTCO buses do not always depart on time. Delays of 30 minutes to over an hour have been reported, particularly on less popular routes. Build buffer time into your schedule, especially if you have onward connections.

Luggage Rules

SAPTCO has generous luggage allowances compared to airlines, which is one advantage of bus travel for those with heavy bags.

• Domestic trips (full ticket): up to 75 kg of checked luggage
• Domestic trips (half ticket / children 2–12): up to 35 kg
• Maximum dimensions: 90 cm length x 50 cm width x 40 cm height per bag
• Excess baggage: SAR 1 per kilogram over the allowance
• International trips: up to 100 kg for a full ticket, 50 kg for a half ticket

Luggage is stored in the hold compartments beneath the bus. Upon arrival, proceed to the luggage department to collect your bags before leaving the station. Passengers are responsible for their own valuables and travel documents — keep these in your carry-on rather than in checked luggage.

City Bus Services

Beyond intercity travel, SAPTCO also operates urban bus networks in several Saudi cities. These are entirely separate services from the intercity coaches, with their own routes, schedules and payment systems.

Riyadh

The Riyadh Bus network, part of the King Abdulaziz Public Transport Project, is the most extensive urban bus system in the Kingdom. As of late 2023, the system operates 54 routes served by 614 buses across more than 1,632 stops. Routes criss-cross the sprawling capital, connecting residential districts with commercial centres, government buildings and shopping areas. The longest route (Route 17) runs 27 km from Al Batha to the Industrial City.

Jeddah

The Jeddah bus network operates 6 main routes with 76 modern buses serving 72 stations across the city. Buses run 18 hours a day, from 05:30 to 22:30, seven days a week. The fare is SAR 3.45 per ride (including VAT). You will need a SAPTCO transport card or a virtual QR code to ride — cash is not accepted on urban buses. Cards are valid for one year from the last use.

Madinah and Eastern Province

Madinah operates an urban bus network with 5 main routes and 116 stations, while the Eastern Province (covering Dammam, Al Khobar and surrounding areas) has its own SAPTCO-operated bus service connecting key areas of the region.



International Bus Routes

Tips for Travelling by SAPTCO Bus

Based on real traveller experiences and practical research, here are the tips that will make your SAPTCO journey smoother.

• Book ahead, not at the door. Popular routes sell out, especially during holidays and weekends. Online booking 2–3 days ahead secures your seat and lets you choose where to sit.
• Arrive early. Check in at the terminal at least one hour before departure for intercity trips, and two hours before for international journeys.
• Bring entertainment and power. Download films, podcasts or music before you board. Bring a power bank — even buses with USB ports may not work at every seat.
• Carry snacks and water. While rest stops offer food, having your own supply avoids dependence on schedules. Saudi rest-stop shops sell dates, Arabic coffee and sandwiches.
