King Salman accuses Tehran of supporting terrorism at Mecca Summit

Friday 31st May 2019

The Saudi Royal Family have called for a decisive and multilateral Arab stand against Iranian threats at a Summit convened by King Salman at the Safa Royal Palace in Mecca today. The emergency Gulf and Arab league summit was convened to address the growing tensions with Iran following an alleged attack on oil installations and tankers in early May.

King Salman stated his intention to avoid war with Iran and expressed his willingness to extend a hand for peace, even as he attacked what he described as Iran’s perpetuation of terrorism in the region directly and via proxies: “Iran has been supporting terrorism for decades and threatening security and stability with the objective of expanding influence and domination, a matter rejected by international norms and conventions,”.

The King urged the GCC states to work together in maintaining security following what he described as “criminal” attacks against four oil tankers off the UAE coast and oil pumping stations in the KSA earlier this month. The attack in question involved four tankers being sabotaged off the port city of Fujairah, an action that raised regional tensions to a new high.

The attack is currently under investigation. US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, has also blamed Iran for the attacks, saying Tehran was trying to inflate the price of crude oil.
