Saudi Royals welcome Qatar diplomats in Jeddah

Wednesday 29th May 2019

A step forward in relations between the Saudi and Qatari Royal family’s has been heralded by Qatari diplomats travelling to Saudi Arabia for talks with King Salman in preparation for their country’s attendance at a major summit in Mecca.

The Saudi Royal family launched a sweeping economic and political blockade against their neighbour two years ago, as well as drawing up plans to dig a wide canal along its border, essentially annexing Qatar(or as it was referred to in plans, Salwa Island) from the main land of the Arabian Peninsula. King Salman has linked the Al Thani’s to funding terrorism and the promotion of the Muslim Brotherhood, a radical group, across the Middle East.

King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud of Saudi Arabia invited Qatar’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, to attend an emergency Gulf Cooperation Council summit to discuss Iran’s recent attacks on Saudi oil installations.

The summit will be held on Thursday in Mecca, and a Qatari plane carrying one of its diplomats was allowed to land in Saudi for the first time in two years on Monday to prepare for Qatar’s attendance.

The Saudi Leadership has accused Tehran of ordering the recent drone attacks which caused significant destruction to the two oil-pumping stations in the kingdom. Iran denied these allegations and Iranian politicians have said they are not seeking a military confrontation.

Following the oil installation attacks, Saudi Prince Turki bin Salman urged Washington to launch military strikes against Iran, through his news paper Arab News.
