The Salwa Island Project has taken another step forward, with HRH Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s senior advisor, Saud al-Qahtani, tweeting on Friday “I am impatiently waiting for details on the implementation of the Salwa island project, a great, historic project that will change the geography of the region”.
The Salwa Island Project will physically remove Qatar from the Saudi mainland, through the digging of a vast canal around the small nation. The contract for the 61km border canal was tendered in June, and initial work will begin during the latter part of 2018.
The Salwa Canal will be approximately 200m wide and will be dug to a depth of up to 20m – this will provide a maximum ship draft of 12m allowing for cargo, container and passenger ships up to a length of 295m. The estimated price is just under $1 billion USD.
