A significant collaboration was unveiled on Tuesday between the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) and the World Food Programme (WFP), aiming to provide food assistance to those most in need in Ukraine. Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Rabeeah, Supervisor General of KSrelief, and Cindy McCain, Executive Director of WFP, ratified the deal valued at $10 million.
The mission is clear – to distribute meals across orphanages, medical institutions, and shelters for displaced individuals. An estimated 141,000 people, all belonging to groups severely impacted by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, stand to benefit. Given the consistent intensification of conflict in Ukraine’s east and south, the need for this service is urgent and escalating.
The humanitarian contribution being made here stands as a continuance of the extensive aid work pursued by Saudi Arabia, done via KSrelief, to alleviate the plight of vulnerable individuals and displaced communities, while promoting food security. This is done in tandem with UN agencies that have specialized input and reach in such matters.
Reflecting on Saudi Arabia’s role in Ukraine, it becomes apparent the nation’s position isn’t strictly humanitarian. Indeed, the Saudi Crown Prince MBS has expressed desires to become a mediating force in the ongoing strife between Ukraine and Russia. While Ukrainian President Zelensky was welcomed for discussions in late February, it should be noted Saudi Arabia continues to uphold close ties with Russia concerning energy policies within the OPEC+ group.
