December Weather Across Saudi Arabia

December delivers the mild, dry conditions that make Saudi Arabia comfortable for outdoor exploration. Rainfall is negligible — averaging around 5mm across the country — and humidity sits at roughly 48%. Expect clear skies almost every day, with daytime warmth giving way to surprisingly cool evenings, especially in the desert interior and highlands. You will want layers: a t-shirt by day, a jacket by night.

City Daytime High Nighttime Low Notes
Riyadh 22–23°C (72–73°F) 9–11°C (48–52°F) Dry and sunny; evenings feel genuinely cool
Jeddah 28–29°C (82–84°F) 18–20°C (64–68°F) Warmest major city; sea temp 26°C — still swimmable
AlUla 23°C (73°F) 8°C (46°F) Cool and breezy; ideal for heritage-site walks
Abha 22–26°C (71–79°F) 13°C (55°F) Highland plateau; biggest day-night temperature swing

Packing tip: Bring a warm jacket for Riyadh, AlUla, and Tabuk evenings — temperatures can drop below 10°C after sunset. A light sweater is enough for Jeddah. Check our Saudi Arabia packing list for a full gear breakdown by season.

Riyadh Season: The Main Event

Riyadh Season is Saudi Arabia’s flagship entertainment mega-event, organised by the General Entertainment Authority. Running from October through March, December sits squarely in its peak. The event transforms the capital into a festival city with concerts, world championships, immersive theme parks, dining, and cultural experiences spread across more than seven million square metres.

Key Zones to Visit

Riyadh Season spans more than a dozen entertainment zones. The ones most relevant in December include:

    • Boulevard City — The 220-acre anchor zone in the Hittin district, often described as “a city within a city.” It houses the ANB Arena (major concerts and boxing), Saudi Arabia’s largest cinema complex (Muvi Cinemas, 25 screens including the Kingdom’s first 4DX screen), the Sala Hub gaming centre (300+ arcade games), dancing fountains, and dozens of restaurants. General entry is typically SAR 25 (~$7).
    • Boulevard World — A cultural zone representing countries from France to China to Morocco, with Michelin-starred chef pop-ups and global cuisine. Entry from SAR 20–30 (~$5–8).
    • Winter Wonderland — A carnival zone with 40+ rides, games, and live shows. Free entry before 6pm; individual ride tickets after.
    • The Groves — Garden-style laneways with live jazz, acoustic performances, lounge terraces, and international dining.
    • Wonder Garden — A 500,000 sqm zone with capacity for 23,000 people, featuring 60+ theatrical and roaming shows and 65 interactive experiences. Entry SAR 25–50 (~$7–13).

For a complete breakdown of every zone, ticket prices, and logistics, see our dedicated Riyadh Season guide.

    December Highlights at Riyadh Season

December is when Riyadh Season’s biggest programming drops. Key events that have anchored recent December calendars include:

    • Soundstorm (MDLBEAST) — The Middle East’s largest music festival, held over three days in mid-December at the Banban venue south of Riyadh. The 2025 edition (December 11–13) featured over 200 artists including Post Malone, Cardi B, Calvin Harris, Halsey, Pitbull, Armin van Buuren, Swedish House Mafia, and Steve Aoki. Ticket tiers range from SAR 119/day for general access (~$32) to SAR 80,000 for a private VIB Box seating 20. Over 450,000 people attended the 2024 edition headlined by Eminem, Linkin Park, Muse, and David Guetta.
    • Noor Riyadh — Billed as the world’s largest light art festival, running from late November through early December. Over 60 large-scale light art installations transform the city into an open-air gallery.
    • Boxing and combat sports — The Kingdom Arena hosts world-championship boxing under the Riyadh Season banner. Recent bouts have included Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk and Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol.
    • International comedy — Stand-up festivals featuring headliners such as Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart, and Aziz Ansari have been staged during the season.

Booking tip: Soundstorm sells out early. Tickets go on sale via mdlbeast.com and webook.com months before the event. Book accommodation in Riyadh as soon as December dates are confirmed — hotel prices spike 50–100% during Soundstorm week.

Diriyah Season and the At-Turaif Heritage Quarter

Running alongside Riyadh Season from November through March, Diriyah Season focuses on culture, heritage, and Najdi traditions. It is centred on the UNESCO World Heritage At-Turaif district — the mud-brick birthplace of the first Saudi state — just 20 minutes northwest of central Riyadh.

    What to Experience

    • Layali Al-Diriyah — Evenings of Najdi hospitality with traditional dining, folk music, and performances in the heritage quarter’s restored courtyards.
    • Souq Al-Mawsim — A seasonal market celebrating cultural partnerships (the 2025–26 edition honoured 70 years of Saudi-Japanese relations with a Kyoto-themed pavilion).
    • Sada Al-Wadi — Live folk arts and Samri musical performances in the valley setting.
    • Diriyah Storytelling Festival — Literary events and narrative performances drawing on Arabian oral traditions.

Diriyah Season is free to attend in most areas, making it an excellent cultural complement to the more commercial Riyadh Season zones. It is easily combined with a day exploring the wider Riyadh travel circuit, including the best day trips from Riyadh and the Edge of the World escarpment.

    AlUla: Winter at Tantora

In Saudi Arabia’s northwest, AlUla runs its own winter festival — Winter at Tantora — from mid-December through early January. Named after the ancient sundial in AlUla’s old town, the festival celebrates the region’s agricultural heritage with theatrical performances, art installations, culinary showcases, and the Ancient Kingdoms Festival honouring the Nabataean and Lihyanite civilisations that once thrived here.

December is the ideal month to visit AlUla. Daytime temperatures hover around 23°C, perfect for exploring Hegra’s Nabataean tombs, hiking to Elephant Rock, and touring the ancient Dadan archaeological site. Nights drop to 8°C, making the hot air balloon rides at dawn a brisk but spectacular experience over the sandstone landscapes.

Getting to AlUla: Direct flights from Riyadh and Jeddah operate to AlUla airport (ULH), with increased frequency during the winter festival season. Alternatively, it is a scenic 4-hour drive from Tabuk or a full-day drive from Medina.

New Year’s Eve in Saudi Arabia

New Year’s Eve is not an official public holiday in Saudi Arabia — the Kingdom follows the Islamic Hijri calendar for religious observances. However, since the entertainment reforms of 2019, NYE has become a major public celebration across the country with fireworks, concerts, and late-night festivities in every major city.

    Where to Celebrate

    • Riyadh — Boulevard City hosts the biggest celebrations, with fireworks, live music, and DJs counting down to midnight. Winter Wonderland and The Groves zones also run NYE programming. Expect massive crowds — arrive early.
    • Jeddah — The Corniche waterfront is the focus, with fireworks reflecting off the Red Sea. Restaurants, cafes, and open-air venues along the port fill with families and tourists. The atmosphere is more relaxed than Riyadh’s festival zones.
    • AlUla — A more intimate desert celebration with concerts and immersive art installations against the sandstone cliffs. Fireworks here are uniquely dramatic, echoing off canyon walls.
    • Dammam and Khobar — The Eastern Province seafront transforms into a pedestrian zone with lights, balloons, live music stages, and food stalls. The Khobar Corniche hosts spectacular firework displays over the Gulf.

Note: Saudi Arabia does not sell alcohol. NYE celebrations are family-friendly and dry. Restaurants and cafes stay open well past midnight in major cities during the festive season. See our Saudi Arabia nightlife guide for what to expect after dark.

Other December Events Worth Planning Around

Joy Awards (January, but book in December)

The Joy Awards, held in mid-January at Boulevard City, are Saudi Arabia’s equivalent of the People’s Choice Awards. The 2026 edition featured Katy Perry, Robbie Williams, and appearances by Squid Game stars, Millie Bobby Brown, and Forest Whitaker. While the ceremony itself falls in January, tickets sell out in December and Riyadh hotels spike around the event. Worth knowing if your December trip extends into the new year.

    WWE Royal Rumble

Riyadh Season has hosted major WWE events in late January/early February (the 2026 Royal Rumble was the first ever held outside North America). If you are a wrestling fan, December is when tickets go on sale.

    Formula E in Jeddah (February)

The Jeddah E-Prix double-header is typically scheduled for February. Like the Joy Awards, it falls just outside December but is worth factoring into a longer trip. See our full 2026 events calendar for dates.

    Practical Information for December Travel

    Flights and Getting There

December is peak season. International flights to Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport (RUH) and Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) fill up, especially around Soundstorm week and New Year’s Eve. Book at least 6–8 weeks ahead for the best fares. Domestic flights between Riyadh, Jeddah, AlUla, and Dammam are frequent but also in high demand — see our Saudi Arabia flights guide for tips on routes and airlines.

    Hotels and Accommodation

Expect peak-season pricing across the board. Average nightly rates run roughly 30–50% above summer prices:

    Category Off-Peak (Summer) December (Peak)
    Budget / 3-star ~$60/night ~$90–120/night
    Mid-range / 4-star ~$100/night ~$150–200/night
    Luxury / 5-star ~$160/night ~$250–350/night

Fridays are the most expensive night; Sundays the cheapest. For the best selection, book months in advance — especially for Soundstorm week and NYE. See our Saudi Arabia hotels guide for recommendations by city and budget.

    What to Wear

Saudi Arabia’s dress code still applies in December: shoulders and knees should be covered in public areas, though entertainment zones tend to be more relaxed. The bigger adjustment is temperature — you genuinely need a warm jacket for Riyadh evenings. Layering is essential: lightweight during the day, warmer pieces for after sunset.

    Getting Around

Riyadh Season zones are spread across the city. Uber and Careem are the easiest way to move between zones, though surge pricing applies during peak event times. Renting a car gives more flexibility for day trips — see our car rental guide for rates and tips. If you are visiting multiple cities, domestic flights are the fastest option; the Haramain train connects Jeddah, Mecca, and Medina.

    Visa Requirements

Most visitors need a tourist e-visa, available online for citizens of 60+ countries. The process takes minutes and costs around $120 including insurance. Some nationalities qualify for visa on arrival. Apply before you fly — see our e-visa step-by-step guide for the latest requirements and fees.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of December

    • Book early. Flights, hotels, and Soundstorm tickets should be secured months before December. Last-minute travellers pay premium rates and face limited availability.
    • Layer up. The temperature gap between day and night catches many visitors off guard. A compact down jacket takes minimal luggage space and makes a big difference.
    • Plan around Soundstorm. If you want to attend, build your trip around those three mid-December days. If you want to avoid the crowds and inflated prices, visit the first or last week of December instead.
    • Don’t skip Diriyah. While Riyadh Season gets the headlines, Diriyah Season offers a more culturally rich, less commercialised experience — and most of it is free.
    • Consider AlUla. December is peak season for AlUla, with Winter at Tantora adding events to an already spectacular landscape. The one-hour flight from Riyadh makes it an easy add-on.
    • Download the apps. The Riyadh Season app and webook.com are essential for buying tickets, checking schedules, and navigating zones. See our Saudi Arabia apps guide for other useful downloads.
