Saudi Arabia Holds WWE Crown Jewel After 6 Events Cancelled or Postponed

Saudi Arabia held WWE Crown Jewel 2026 at ANB Arena, Riyadh, as 6 scheduled autumn events were cancelled or postponed amid Houthi attacks.

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia held WWE Crown Jewel, the eighth edition of the annual pay-per-view and the 16th WWE event in the kingdom under a 10-year partnership with the General Entertainment Authority, at ANB Arena in Riyadh on November 7, 2026, after six other flagship events on the capital’s autumn calendar were cancelled or postponed because of Houthi missile attacks and regional instability.

The event went ahead on the same day the Saudi-led coalition intercepted a Houthi cruise missile over Riyadh. King Khalid International Airport has operated under restricted access since Houthi strikes on October 10, with the General Authority of Civil Aviation extending the suspension on November 4. The commentary team — Michael Cole and Corey Graves — called the show from WWE headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut, not from the arena in Riyadh, according to the event’s Wikipedia entry.

What Happened at Crown Jewel 2026?

Crown Jewel 2026 began at noon Eastern Time (17:00 UTC) at ANB Arena, a Riyadh venue also marketed as “The Venue.” The show was broadcast globally on Netflix and ESPN Unlimited, according to Fightful and the event’s Wikipedia entry.

The announced card featured four bouts. Roman Reigns, the World Heavyweight Champion, faced Sami Zayn, the Undisputed WWE Champion, for the Men’s Crown Jewel Championship. Liv Morgan defended against Chelsea Green for the Women’s Crown Jewel Championship. Cody Rhodes met Randy Orton in a Last Man Standing match. The Vision — the tag team of champions Bron Breakker and Austin Theory — defended the World Tag Team Championship against Penta and Je’Von Evans, per Fightful’s November 7 card listing and Wikipedia.

At the time of publication, the event was underway and final match results had not been confirmed.

Why the Venue Changed

Crown Jewel was originally scheduled for the outdoor Riyadh Season Stadium in the King Abdullah Financial District, a venue built for large-scale open-air events. On October 28 — 10 days before the show — Riyadh Season’s ticketing page was updated to list ANB Arena as the new venue, and ticket holders for the original stadium were offered refunds, according to Sacnilk.

Fightful Select reported that the switch was driven by safety concerns rather than ticket-sales considerations. Dave Meltzer, writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, said the move reflected security calculations tied to Houthi missile and drone attacks on Riyadh infrastructure, as reported by WrestlingInc. Neither WWE nor Riyadh Season issued a public statement confirming the reason for the change.

Meltzer wrote that the decision to hold the event rested with GEA chairman Turki Alalshikh. “TKO CEO Ari Emmanuel and President Mark Shapiro will make the call on whether the roster travels and that depends on whether Al-Sheikh approves,” Meltzer wrote, as cited by WrestlingInc on October 19. Meltzer added: “The money involved is too large to risk. WWE would not lose money on its current Saudi deal if the event were postponed, but a pullout could hurt negotiations when that deal expires in 2028,” per WrestlingInc citing the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

No WWE performers declined to travel to Saudi Arabia for Crown Jewel 2026, according to WrestlingInc. Some WWE staff were reportedly “discouraged from pulling out” despite security concerns, according to Sacnilk citing the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Alalshikh had signalled weeks earlier that Riyadh’s entertainment calendar would continue. On October 11, he posted on X about boxer Canelo Alvarez: “He told me he’ll still fight in Riyadh this October, no matter what happens,” as reported by Sacnilk citing the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Alvarez fought Christian Mbilli at the same ANB Arena on October 31, according to Arab News and Khaleej Times.

The Events That Did Not Happen

While Crown Jewel and the Alvarez fight went ahead, six other events scheduled for Riyadh this autumn did not.

The 10th Future Investment Initiative — widely known as “Davos in the Desert” and scheduled for October 26–29, per Kuwait Times in August — was postponed to 2027, with organisers citing “heightened regional tensions and Houthi attacks,” according to Al Jazeera on October 20. The AFC Asian Cup was postponed by 11 months, from January to December 2027, according to Arabian Gulf Business Insight on November 3 and The Malaysian Reserve on the same date. The Union Cycliste Internationale cancelled the Urban Cycling World Championships after missile strikes on Riyadh’s airport, according to Cycling Weekly on October 16.

Three additional events were affected in a single week in mid-October: the Misk Foundation cancelled its global forum for young leaders, the Saudi International golf tournament was postponed indefinitely, and the Six Kings Slam tennis exhibition was moved from October 21–24 to December 27–30, according to the Boston Globe on October 16. The Globe’s headline read: “Saudi Arabia’s Flagship Events at Risk as Houthis Strike at Heart of Kingdom.”

National Day fireworks and drone shows had already been postponed indefinitely in September, according to Khaleej Times on September 23. The New York Times wrote on October 10 that Houthi attacks on King Khalid International Airport “threaten Riyadh’s events calendar.”

Riyadh Season 2026 — the annual entertainment programme overseen by Alalshikh — was announced to open on October 21 with a 10-week programme, according to Gulf News on September 27. Crown Jewel was listed as part of the Riyadh Season schedule, per Listmag. But with King Khalid International Airport still under restricted access, the number of visitors who could reach Riyadh for any event remained limited.

How Much Is the WWE-Saudi Deal Worth?

TKO President Mark Shapiro confirmed that the Royal Rumble, held in Riyadh in February 2026, generated $55 million in revenue, according to SEScoops citing Shapiro’s remarks. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has estimated the total value of the 10-year WWE-Saudi partnership at approximately $450 million. That figure is Meltzer’s reporting, not an officially confirmed number, as cited by WrestlingInc and SportsKeeda.

In November 2019, WWE and the GEA announced an expansion of their event partnership through 2027, adding a second annual large-scale event in Saudi Arabia, according to a press release published on WWE’s website. The partnership, which began in 2018, runs through 2028, per WrestlingInc.

Crown Jewel and the Canelo Alvarez fight were among the few international events staged in the capital during a Riyadh Season that had been announced to run 10 weeks, per Gulf News on September 27.

Same-Day Security

Saudi Arabia asked the United Nations Security Council to act against the attacks, per Al Jazeera on October 9.

King Khalid International Airport reopened on October 18 to prior-permission flights only, but the General Authority of Civil Aviation extended the suspension on November 4. Commercial aviation in and out of the capital remained constrained on the day of Crown Jewel.

Background

WWE and the General Entertainment Authority signed their partnership in 2018. The first event under the deal, the Greatest Royal Rumble, took place in Jeddah in April of that year. Crown Jewel debuted in Riyadh in November 2018 and has been held annually since, with the exception of 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Wikipedia. The current 10-year deal runs through 2028, per WrestlingInc. The partnership is part of a broader Saudi strategy to host major international events under Vision 2030, the economic diversification programme launched in 2016.
