Stubborn Stalemate: U.S. and Saudi’s Quest for Security Pact Faces Israeli Resistance

Halfway through President Biden’s tenure, negotiations were instigated with Saudi chiefs, aiming to instigate formal diplomatic relations between the kingdom and Israel. However, these discussions were undercut when clashes broke out between Israel and Hamas last October.

In efforts to resuscitate the potential for an agreement, American and Saudi officials have put increased pressure on Israel. Requirements on the table? A halt to hostilities in Gaza and decisive movement toward the creation of an independent Palestinian state. These representatives now hint at nearing a conclusive concord concerning the main components of the Saudi’s desired agreement: a defense pact between the U.S. and Saudi, and collaboration on a civil nuclear scheme within the kingdom.

During his recent visit to Riyadh, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken held a private discussion with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi’s effective leader, on these topics, as revealed by the State Department. This dialogue is set for further elaboration in the upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia and Israel by Jake Sullivan, the National Security Advisor to the White House.
